Report: Whitney Houston killed by prescription drugs and alcohol

Posted 9:37am on Monday, Feb. 13, 2012

Following yesterday's emotionally charged Grammys ceremony, which featured a sprinkling of tributes to the late Whitney Houston (who died at the age of 48 Saturday), news comes this morning via TMZ that, according to Houston family sources, the Los Angeles County Coroner's office is reporting that Houston died from a combination of prescription medication and alcohol, rather than drowning. (Houston was confirmed to have been found in a bathtub in her room at the Beverly Hilton.)

It's unclear exactly when the coroner will release the official report -- last night, news reports suggested the coroner's office was awaiting the results of a toxicology report, which could take four to six weeks, before making its findings official. Nevertheless, as Houston's family prepares to say goodbye and her ex-husband Bobby Brown rushes to his daughter's side, this sad story will continue unfolding over the coming days and weeks.

UPDATE: The Dallas Morning News is reporting, via CBS DFW, that a candlelight vigil will be held for Houston at 7 p.m. Wednesday, in front of the Old Courthouse in downtown Fort Worth. No details yet who's behind the vigil. An email from Donnell Ballard, with K103 FM Radio, claims responsibility for the vigil. "Please bring plenty of candles and posters and come out and show some love and respect," writes Ballard. Those interested can call 817-233-4060 for more information.
