Brandi Carlile at House of Blues
Given the intensity on display when Carlile last passed through town (in May at the Granada Theater, where she busted out a shockingly raw version of the Ramones' I Wanna Be Sedated), it's safe to say this evening, billed as an "acoustic trio" show, might not be such a solemn affair. Carlile, with her longtime collaborators Phil and Tim Hanseroth in tow, continues to tour in support of her 2011 effort, Live at Benaroya Hall. There's a new studio album -- her first since 2009's Give Up the Ghost -- reportedly due this year.
8 p.m. Tuesday. House of Blues, Dallas. $27.50-$39.50.
Paul Wall at the Aardvark
This gig isn't exactly your conventional headlining gig -- it's part of the Red Bull-sponsored six-city, intrastate "Skooled" tour, which takes a handful of up-and-coming Texas rap acts (A.Dd+, the Niceguys, Kydd Jones, DJ Sober and Worldwide) on an educational journey throughout the Lone Star State. Each date's headliner (Houston's Paul Wall does the honors in Fort Worth) will help mentor the supporting acts, teaching them the ins and outs of promotion and networking. The upshot for fans? A free hip-hop show featuring some of the brightest talents Texas has to offer.
9 p.m. Thursday. The Aardvark, Fort Worth. Free.
