The Japanese phenom arrived in high style at DFW Airport on Friday afternoon, with a cadre of security and what appeared to be a T-shirt featuring a marijuana leaf. The shirt, which also read "I Will Survive" (because he's a big Gloria Gaynor fan?), immediately drew curiosity and comments galore in the social media universe.
But by that point the fun and games in Facebook-land and Twitter-ville had already, um, been sparked up.
Yu was asked about the T-shirt at his Rangers welcome press conference, and he said he had no idea it might be construed as a stoner shirt. He just liked the shirt.
The Rangers, who will be shelling out $111 million for Darvish's services over the next six years, probably preferred seeing him in his No. 11 jersey on the mound at the ballpark. A sign of a World Series victory to come? We can all hope.
As for the not-quite-pot shirt, let's give the 25-year-old right-hander a free pass. It's not like we spotted him wearing it in the In-N-Out drive thru, ordering 10 double-doubles animal style.
