Bar & Book at Lone Star Park is a great new sports bar

GRAND PRAIRIE --  Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie has unveiled the multi-million dollar renovation of the 15 year-old Post Time Pavilion and christened the new sports bar/simulcast facility as Bar & Book. From the moment I entered the 36,000 square foot racebook, I felt like I was in Las Vegas.

The centerpiece of the renovation is the glass enclosed sports bar area with eleven 32" flat screens and three projection televisions dedicated for major sporting events. The new racebook can accommodate 237 customers with individual racing carrels that can be reserved daily for $3.00 per seat. You are reading this correctly: this is a place where you can hang out and watch sports such as the NFL playoffs, or NBA (the sports bar has the NBA League Pass) while wagering on horses.

The racebook is split into smoking and non-smoking areas. The non-smoking area has a tiered level including 30 lounge chairs and 12 dining tables. There are also two VIP suites with new video walls featuring the latest in HDTV technology and a dedicated wait staff that are reserved for top players.

The sports bar menu features items priced from $6.00 to $13.00 and includes 'Beginnings' (appetizers), 'Going Green' (salads), 'Something Special' (daily entree specials), 'Burgers, Sandwiches, Classics' (entrees), 'Sides' and 'Desserts.'

The beverages of choice include 12 beers on tap and 48 bottled beers. There is also an extensive collection of hand-crafted ales and lagers. Both red and white wine are offered as well as a full bar with premium brands.

Perhaps my favorite part of this really cool new spot is the 9-by-12 foot art banners featuring the 1990s Dallas Cowboys (Aikman, Smith and Irvin), the 2011 Dallas Mavericks winning the NBA championship and Texas Rangers Nolan Ryan putting Robin Ventura in a headlock after he charged the mound at old Arlington Stadium.

Expect this to be one of the most popular sports bars in North Texas. I can only imagine how great of a scene it will be for the upcoming UFC fight or Super Bowl XLVI!

General admission is free on non-live race days.
