Eats beat: Say hello to the day at north-side El Paseo

Posted 3:00pm on Tuesday, Jan. 03, 2012

At age 25, even El Paseo Restaurant had to start rolling out of bed earlier.

Long a Tex-Mex favorite for fajitas and combination plates, the flagship El Paseo on Texas 199 is now serving weekday and weekend breakfast.

Not just any breakfast. The Lerma family is serving a choice of 12 platters or burritos with two completely new hot sauces, one a salsa verde made with fiery serranos and another with rich, red guajillos.

Hector Lerma, leader of the four El Paseos from Keller to Mineral Wells, said he started going to breakfast more and "it became my favorite meal of the day."

"Our family can do a good breakfast, too," he said.

"We're trying some dishes that are different. But we want to have something for everybody."

Besides huevos rancheros or migas, El Paseo also offers sweet-cream pancakes and "Big Hombre" omelets with ham, sausage and bacon.

On the Tex-Mex side, specialties include the seldom-seen huevos divorciados, a huevos rancheros platter but with the eggs divided, one with green sauce and one with red sauce. The menu also offers a spinach-mushroom-jack cheese omelet ($8.49).

The top breakfast is sirloin steak-and-eggs ($12.49) or pork chop Mexicana topped with sauteed tomatoes, onions and jalapeños ($9.99).

For now, the only El Paseo serving breakfast is the oldest location, 5436 Jacksboro Highway (Texas 199), in Sansom Park, one mile east of Loop 820. It's open from 7 a.m. until 9 or 10 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays; 817-625-9755, elpaseomex.com.

George's Imported Foods is back. Yes, again. For months, the Phiripes family's 60-year-old Greek grocery-deli in west Fort Worth has been open only off-and-on.

Owner Nick Phiripes says George's is back to stay and has even added new menu items such as Greek chicken pitas with tzatziki sauce or grilled spinach-basil-feta paninis.

George's is part of Fort Worth history. When it opened in 1951 at the West Fork river bridge, Greek immigrant families still farmed the Trinity bottomland. ( Tina Fey of 30 Rock is a cousin.)

George's serves sandwiches, Greek salads, dolmas, spanakopita and baklava at lunch Tuesdays through Saturdays; 4424 White Settlement Road, 817-737-0414.
