Opening night at the Owner's Box Sports Bar & Grill

DALLAS -- The Owner's Box Sports Bar & Grill inside the massive new Omni Dallas Hotel that is connected to the Dallas Convention Center is a perfect sports bar for a DFW sports fan that also enjoys taking in the Dallas scene. With the hotel's opening day of 11-11-11 in full swing, we chose to drop by and check out its sports bar.

The first thing that jumps out upon entry is an ode to Dallas sports with newspaper 'Front Pages' featuring historic moments such as the recent Dallas Mavericks NBA championship, the Dallas Stars winning the Stanley Cup in 1999, Michael Johnson's Olympic glory, the passing of golf legend Byron Nelson and the Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl XXX title back in 1996. You are handed a menu that has the food and drink items intertwined with more local sports. Being opening day, I was given "Issue 1, Volume 1" that included notes about Dale Earnhardt, Jr. winning at Texas Motor Speedway in 2000, the Texas Rangers retiring Nolan Ryan's #34 and the Iron Skillit '35 game between TCU and SMU.

We managed to spot an open table in the back near the 16-foot screen and the two pool tables, although it was tempting to sit out on the patio near the fire pit on the picture-perfect fall evening. I ordered Texas Dublin Barbecue Wings while my buddy chose the Red Neck Burger that included brisket, bacon, cheddar cheese and crisp onions.

Being opening day, I was prepared to grade on a steep curve, but the food was good and the service attentive in spite of the huge crowd on hand. Granted, I was distracted by the 72 LCD HDTVs and the very attractive ladies next to us as they attempted to shoot pool.

A quick stroll through the crowded patio on the way out reaffirmed that The Owner's Box will be a hot spot that watch sports or people-watch.
