Van Cliburn Foundation names interim president

Posted 10:53pm on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011

FORT WORTH -- Alann Bedford Sampson will take over as interim president and CEO of the Van Cliburn Foundation, it was announced Friday.

Sampson had most recently served on the board as chairwoman of the foundation's 50th anniversary celebration. From 1994 through January 2011, she was the chairwoman of the board. And from October 2009 through January 2011, she was chairwoman and interim president.

She replaces David Worters who resigned as president and chief executive in June after only six months on the job. "I've found that I don't have sufficient passion for this," he told the Star-Telegram at the time. "The Cliburn deserves someone who does."

Sampson's appointment comes as the foundation conducts "an international search to permanently fill the position," according to a statement.

Pianist Van Cliburn also said in the statement: "It is a great personal pleasure that Alann Sampson is accepting the interim president and CEO position. ... Her vast knowledge and wise counsel over the many years of experience will benefit the future of the foundation. We are grateful that she is willing to undertake this responsibility."

The 35th season of the Cliburn Concert Series begins Sept. 13 at Bass Hall, and the next International Piano Competition takes place in 2013.
