Round 2: Charley's vs. Grumps

Posted 7:54pm on Tuesday, Jul. 19, 2011

(3) Charley's Old-Fashioned Hamburgers, 4616 Granbury Road, Fort Worth vs. (7) Grumps, 108 S. Main St., Burleson

Charley's was primed for an upset at the hands of Grumps, a big-burger newcomer from Granbury that has shaken up the market in beef-crazed Burleson. But on this day, seniority beat size. Charley's delivered a cheeseburger with something Grumps' burger lacked: noticeable cheese. Charley's third-pound burger was so loaded with cheese that some stuck to the tissue, and the slivers of diced onion nestled joyously in a soft yellow bed on the bottom bun. The other dominant flavor was black pepper; the drawback was a flimsy tomato slice. Grumps offered a half-pound burger with two slices of red onion and juicy tomatoes, but the pickle and onion fell out right away, and the burger had to be dismantled to locate any cheese. No wonder Grumps fans recommend adding queso.

The winner: Charley's
