Maple and Motor vs. Twisted Root

Posted 6:37pm on Tuesday, Jul. 12, 2011

(7) Maple and Motor, 4810 Maple Ave., Dallas vs. (2) Twisted Root, 2615 Commerce St., Dallas

Twisted Root is a funky watering hole turning out an inspired menu of burgers, including those made with bison, antelope and ostrich. As clever as these are, however, our less-exotic beef burger topped with guacamole, cheddar and chipotle sauce was a tad overcooked. The veggies -- lettuce, tomato and spicy pickles -- held up OK, but we just kept thinking that there should be more impact on the palate. No matter, because Maple and Motor, an upstart near Love Field and Market Hall, offered a thick, flavorful patty topped with crunchy bacon, grilled jalapeño slices and fried egg, cradled by an expertly grilled bun. It wowed us as no burger has in years.

The winner: Maple and Motor
