(4) Johnny B's, 2704 East Southlake Boulevard, Southlake vs. (5) Jackson's Grocery , 1298 E. Kennedale Parkway, Kennedale
The original plan was that we would be eating at the original Jackson's in Arlington, which opened in 1974. But that spot is closed for remodeling, which sent us to Kennendale, where Larry Scott - who founded the orignal Jackson's before selling it in the 1990s - opened a new Jackson's last year. As it turned out, though, the new location couldn't compete with Johnny B's, which has only been around since 2004 but which just seems to get better with age. We tried the double cheeseburger, which packed a powerful wallop with its softer, more flavorful beef, a signature sweet sourdough bun, oozing double cheese, a dab of special sauce and four bands of powerful onion. Jackson's entry, meanwhile, is a Whataburger-sized Texas classic with mustard and diced onions, offering more bun and more heft than Johnny B's but not as much flavor. Sorry Jackson's, Johnny B's is for real. The winner: Johnny B's
