Surveying our ecletic arts scene, from the galleries to the stage.
The Star-Telegram arts writers spotlight what's rocking their world this week.
1 Nick Cave returns: The University of North Texas is reconnecting with Nick Cave. The acclaimed performance artist, a former UNT student, has been invited back to Denton to be UNT's artist-in-residence for the Institute for the Advancement of the Arts. He will visit twice a semester during the 2011-2012 academic year to work with students, faculty and the arts community, as well as create a new performance piece that requires the construction of 30 new soundsuits, which are wildly colorful, extremely kinetic sound-making garments that sort of resemble an ultimate My Little Pony.

2 Transformers: Dark of the Moon: If you're looking for a big, brain-dead blockbuster that makes you realize you are in the midst of summer moviegoing madness, try Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The third installment in the saga of warring robots has wooden acting and, at 2 1/2 hours, runs on too long, but director Michael Bay seems to be in on the joke this time and many of the effects are truly spectacular.

3 The Glee Project: Twelve aspiring singer-actors, including North Richland Hills' Cameron Mitchell, compete to win a seven-episode guest-starring arc on Glee. Yes, it's another singing competition, but what separates it from American Idol, The Voice and others is that it gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Glee. If you missed the first three episodes (which were better than many of last season's episodes of Glee), Oxygen is re-airing them 6-9 p.m. Sunday; the series airs at 8 p.m. Sundays on Oxygen.
