CD review: Lonely Island's 'Turtleneck & Chain'

The Lonely Island

Turtleneck & Chain

Posted 7:57am on Wednesday, May. 25, 2011

If the Lonely Island was only concerned with jokes about sex and feces, the trio -- Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone -- would've worn out its welcome long ago.

But where the guys surpass, well, what's currently a pretty sparse field of competitors is in the on-point satire of hip-hop and R&B. The songs on sophomore effort Turtleneck & Chain are first and foremost catchy, with production values rivaling anything in the Top 40.

It's the listenability that allows the more subtle jokes to sink in. Of course, the more one-note tracks, like Attracted to Us (which buries guest star Beck), suffer accordingly, suggesting that an EP might be the Island's best choice in the future.

The CD, the follow-up to 2009's Incredibad, features more songs that initially premiered on Saturday Night Live as digital shorts, including the hysterical Jack Sparrow, which made guest star Michael Bolton a viral sensation for ... probably the first time in his entire career.

The strongest songs here are already familiar: I Just Had Sex, Motherlover and Shy Ronnie 2 are just as funny without their accompanying visuals. (The CD includes a DVD with seven digital shorts.)
