Arts Fifth Avenue rounds up a herd of hoofers for National Tap Dance Day

Posted 12:39pm on Thursday, May. 19, 2011

Happy feet

Dancers from all over the Metroplex will converge on Fort Worth on Wednesday to celebrate National Tap Dance Day. That's right: It's official, thanks to former President George H.W. Bush. Twenty-two years later, Fort Worth's Arts Fifth Avenue is bringing a ton of tap-dancers, plus concessions and more, together for a big celebration of America's indigenous dance day. You can count on Gracey Tune and other light-footed folk to be steppin' lively, so don't get left behind. Outdoor stage show starts at 8 p.m., with outreach programs and a silent auction an hour earlier.

7 p.m. Wednesday. 1628 Fifth Ave. Fort Worth. Free. 817-923-9500; www.artsfifthavenue.org.

Very Verdi

The grandiose Il Trovatore opens this weekend as part of the Fort Worth Opera's ongoing annual festival. Sometimes derided for the convoluted plot, it's nonetheless among the most widely applauded grand operas, thanks to Verdi's score. Ranked as one of the most-performed properties in the operatic repertoire, Italian tenor Enrico Caruso once noted that all you need to put this warhorse over was the world's four greatest singers. As it turns out, the Fort Worth Opera may well have the powerhouse vocals Caruso believed were needed, with the likes of soprano Marjorie Owens, winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the McCammon competition, in the cast. And despite the improbable duels, long-lost brothers and burned babies, you've got the "Anvil Chorus," which transcends all language barriers. In Italian; English and Spanish translations.

7:30 p.m. Saturday; repeats May 29 and June 3. Bass Hall, Fort Worth. $16.50-$174.90. 817-731-0726; www.fwopera.org.
