They may not be pros, but the 70-plus performers scheduled to converge on Fort Worth for the Van Cliburn Foundation's Sixth International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs are no slouches. Winnowed from applicants from around the world, most boast years of formal training, a lifetime of experience and, in many cases, wins in other piano competitions. Some are doctors, some are lawyers and one has been workin' on the railroad all his professional life. Regardless of what they do for a living, they're united by talent. Hailing from Europe, Asia and all over North America, the coterie of players not only attracts fans, but also a serious panel of judges to evaluate the performances and award the prizes. Like they say, come Monday the air will be filled with the sound of music. All rounds of play and the awards ceremony are open to the public.
