A heaping helping of news & reviews from DFWs dining scene.

The Cellar is a cool new spot in Las Colinas

Posted 2:39pm on Monday, Mar. 28, 2011

While some of my buddies and I would visit the old Texas Bar & Grill -- or as we referred to it, the "T-BAG" -- in Las Colinas, we always left with the same questions: why was a place with such a cool location such a dud? Finally, it came to the point where we opted for Cool River Cafe, The Ranch in Las Colinas, Champps or Blue Fish. So when word came that a new restaurant and bar would be replacing the closed down T-BAG, it was good news to residents of the Irving utopia.

The Cellar Restaurant & Bar is directly across from the Omni Mandalay Hotel in what feels like a mini-version of the San Antonio Riverwalk. With free validated parking in the neighboring VHA garage, you enter the Cellar on street level and immediately walk downstairs. We chose to sit outside on the patio that extends to the Mandalay Canal and offers an amazing atmosphere, especially on a 77-degree evening.

The crowd featured several gorgeous ladies sitting on the other side of the windmill in the center of the area as well as multiple golfers bragging about their rounds at the nearby Hackberry Creek Country Club. The more adult beverages they consumed, the better their rounds became. Our really cool waitress told us that the crowd at lunch is completely different -- many of the patrons are from the nearby Fortune 500 companies that call Las Colinas their home.

I had a Flame Broiled NY Steak and shrimp that was really good. My buddies devoured the Texan (a grilled chicken sandwich with pepper jack cheese), Chicken Fried Steak and Fresh Spinach Salad. Yes, one of us actually ate healthy!

The Cellar also offers theme nights, such as Meet Up Monday, Wines-day and Canal Side Sundays. Happy Hour is daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. And I am ready to try the weekend brunch, which features "Build-Your-Own-Pancakes."

With the food and the level of service, the Cellar is a 100 percent upgrade from the T-BAG. It is as if they took everything wrong with the old place and magically fixed it. In the process, they also added a cool new place to hang out in Las Colinas.
