Southwest, Paschal to host battle of rock bands

Posted 10:17pm on Thursday, Mar. 24, 2011

There are all sorts of school fundraisers out there but perhaps not many as potentially loud as this one: The second annual Cowtown Rocks, a battle of high school rock/garage bands hosted by Fort Worth's Southwest and Paschal high schools, will take place next month.

"We were looking for a fundraiser idea for the Paschal Band and thought it might be fun to put together an event where rock/garage bands could play and compete in a venue that would attract a broad audience," Jim Sager, one of the event organizers and a parent of a Paschal High junior, said in an e-mail.

Last year's show, which featured nine bands as well as a guest performance by the popular local outfit Josh Weathers & True Endeavors, went well enough that organizers at Southwest wanted to be involved this year.

Bands wanting to enter need to fill out a form at www.cowtownrocks.com by Wednesday. The groups will be given scores from judges involved in the music business, as well as fans. Those with the top scores will perform April 30 at Southwest High School for the finale. The special guest local artist has not been announced.

The winning band receives $1,000 cash.

Tickets are $10. Proceeds from Cowtown Rocks will help offer music-lesson scholarships to students, while matching funds from others will go to the poverty relief organization Bread for a Hungry World.

"We would like for Cowtown Rocks to become a major event for high-school-age bands all over Texas," Sager said. "We envision having it over several days and help provide a venue where a band can showcase their talent and maybe help propel them to greater opportunities."
