Austin Dracula in a church? Welcome to SXSW. Grammy-nominated guitarist Gary Lucas has traveled the world, providing soundtracks for silent horror films and earning plenty of acclaim along the way. Tuesday, he brought the Spanish-language version of Dracula (which, like the famed Bela Lugosi version, was also filmed in 1931 on the same sets) to Austin's Central Presbyterian Church for a unique blend of film and music.
After a brief introduction, wherein Lucas provided some context for what we were about to experience, the lights dimmed to a pale blue hue. Shrouded in darkness, Lucas delivered wonderfully textured sounds that amplified what was transpiring onscreen; a few of the effects even bordered on hair-raising. It was hypnotic, unsettling and fascinating -- a great way to ease into the blitzkrieg of bands that await as the music portion of SXSW kicks into high gear today.
