Whoever said good things come to those who wait, didn’t spend much time in DFW. We waited a REALLY long time to get another NBA All-Star Game, only to get a record snowfall on All-Star weekend in 2010. When North Texas finally got a chance to host its first Super Bowl last week, we also go an ice storm for the ages.
But DFW would not be denied. The show (and our celebrity parties) had to go on. So we strapped on our skates and braved the frozen tundra of I-30 to hit as many star-studded soirees as we could during Super Bowl week.
We met aces and angels, X’s and O’s, leather and laces, Bud girls and body-painted beauties. We rocked with the Kid and grooved with Usher and Nelly. And in the end, we crowned our very own champion of the Super Bowl parties.
BEST SUPER BOWL XLV PARTY: Mark Cuban's HDNet/DIRECTV Super Bowl Party
This was a first-class affair all the way. Celebs like Spike Lee and Marissa Miller walked the blue carpet at the invitation-only party, and the entertainment by Usher and DJ Samantha Ronson simply killed it! The party tent in Victory Park was on the same site that the DIRECTV Celebrity Beach Bowl was played a few hours earlier.
When I spoke to the Dallas Mavericks owner to let him know of the prestigious award, he confidently said, "Of course it was. No VIP lounges. No attitudes. Just an open bar with a lot of fun people dancing to Samantha Ronson and Usher."
BEST THEME PARTY: Maxim’s State Fair Super Bowl Party at Centennial Hall.
The adult-themed carnival came complete with a midway and bumper cars. Celebs like Terrell Owens, Erin Andrews, the Entourage cast and Chuck Liddell walked the red carpet along with Maxim cover girl Olivia Munn.
HOTTEST TICKET: Playboy Super Bowl party at Bud Light Hotel.
One of the most-talked about parties leading up to the big week did not disappoint as more than 3,000 people packed the party tent to mingle with Playmates such as Francesca Frigo and the bunnies. And the Bud Light Hotel delivered the wow factor.
The GQ party in Dallas was hosted by Andy Roddick and his wife Brooklyn Decker and attracted the Entourage cast, Mark Sanchez, Terrell Owens and many others. The ESPN party at Fort Worth’s River Ranch featured Reggie Bush, Andre Johnson, Nastia Luikin, Tony Dorsett and an electric performance by Kid Rock.
A-LIST PARTY: Audi Forum Party
Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and Justin Timberlake parked themselves here. So did DFW’s hottest couple, Candice Crawford and Tony Romo. And VIPs were driven around the icy roads in their own personal Audis.
MOST PRESIDENTIAL PARTY: Leigh Steinberg 25th Annual Super Bowl Party.
The sports super agent hosted a laid back party with a Texas feel. It included Eddie Deen's BBQ and a guest list that included former President George W. Bush and Serena Williams.
HOTTEST HOST OF A SUPER BOWL PARTY: Bonnie-Jill Laflin
She hosted the 'Everything's Bigger in Texas LIVE' party in Uptown. The former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader, San Francisco 49ers cheerleader and Los Angeles Lakers scout was the most beautiful woman I encountered in a week that included the Maxim and Playboy parties and all of the other events in between.
COOLEST HOST OF A SUPER BOWL PARTY: Jesse Jane
BEST SUPER BOWL PARTY YOU DIDN'T HEAR ABOUT: Rachel Starr’s party at Experience in Dallas Alley. While Maxim and Playboy got a lot of press, this Dallas star’s party flew under the radar, attracting big crowds via word of mouth.
SUPER BOWL PARTY MOST AFFECTED BY THE WEATHER: Aces & Angels
It took place on Wednesday and this one had the potential to be off the chain if the weather was halfway decent. But it wasn’t. Day-of discount tickets attracted a decent crowd to the event hosted by Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed and benefiting USO.
CLUB WITH MOST PRO ATHLETES: ZOUK
On Wednesday night it was The Moves Magazine party at ZOUK, hosted by Ray Lewis and featuring appearances by Michael Irvin, Marcus Allen and Mark Ingram. Saturday night was the Hall of Fame party for Deion Sanders. And where athletes are, beautiful women follow.
WORST SUPER BOWL PARTY: theEvent featuring Prince
It could be retitled "theDisaster." One of the most highly anticipated and expensive events first changed to a smaller venue in Addison and then, on the day of the concert, it was canceled, then back on and then officially canceled minutes before the party was set to begin. Kerplooey.
MOST STAR-STUDDED SUPER BOWL RESTAURANT: Al Biernat's in Dallas
The place to be for the visiting Hollywood celebs and pro athletes, Al Biernat's impressive Super Bowl week clientele included Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, Alex Rodriguez and Cameron Diaz, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, Jerry Jones and family, Sam Bradford, Marcus Allen and Tobey Maguire.
BEST PLACE TO SPOT A PLAYBOY PLAYMATE: AURA Lounge in Uptown
Their line-up of X's & O's parties included International Playboy Playmate and Playboy celebrity cover girl Rhiannon along with Playmates Heather Van Viper, Alie Layus and Nicole Nightingale. Beautiful girls flock to AURA every weekend, so it only makes sense the upscale lounge would shine on DFW's biggest party week.
BEST RED CARPET: The Sports Illustrated Presents: The Black Eyed Peas Friday NightB4 XLV Party.
Hugh Jackman, Adrien Brody, FOX Sports studio host Michael Strahan, Chuck Liddell and Owen Wilson were just a few of the stars at this soiree at the Tower Building at Fair Park.
MOST VALUABLE DRIVER: My 'chauffeur' for the evening, Austin Haden
He whisked me around in his BMW through the brutal downtown Dallas traffic and dropped me off at the red carpet of everyone of these parties as we circumvented the $50-100 parking or mandatory valet policies.
