'America the Beautiful,' sure ... the national anthem, not so much

Posted 8:34pm on Sunday, Feb. 06, 2011

Standing on the 10-yard line in the opening moments of a Super Bowl is an experience I won't soon forget. It was overwhelming with so much going on, but the stadium quieted down, to allow 's Lea Michele to sing America the Beautiful. Surrounded by members of the Air Force's Tops in Blue choir, Michele delivered a competent, not especially showy rendition of the song. It won't go down as one of the all-time great Super Bowl musical performances, but it also wasn't a trainwreck.

The same can't be said for Grammy winner Christina Aguilera, however, who joined a staggering list of Super Bowl stumbles (bad weather, seat snafus, etc.) by flubbing the lyrics to The Star Spangled Banner. Although she dialed down her usual over-the-top melisma (save for a few quick runs here and there), Aguilera simply failed to get the lyrics right, which, given the fact that she's done this before, is a little baffling. There was plenty of online snark before the game that Aguilera would drag the anthem out well past the appropriate point with lots of vocal runs, but instead, she'll become the butt of an entirely different set of jokes.
