NEW UPDATE: Prince is a no-show at theEvent

Posted 1:35pm on Friday, Feb. 04, 2011

UPDATE: Preston Jones will be updating this story later, but here's what what Preston reported via Twitter tonight, after a day of on-again, off-again news about theEvent with Prince and Erykah Badu:

theEvent with Prince is canceled (for real this time). According to a rep on the scene, his band made it, but Prince did not.

What follows is an accounting of how the day's earlier news unfolded.

Just over the transom moments ago came the bad news: Tonight's high-toned soiree featuring Prince and Erykah Badu at Addison's InterContinental hotel, otherwise known as theEvent, has been canceled.

The statement from the Goss-Michael Foundation's Joyce Goss is very to the point (the foundation was to have been the beneficiary of the evening's proceeds; tickets started at $1,500): "We are extremely disappointed that theEvent featuring Prince, scheduled for Friday, February 4, at the Intercontinental Hotel, has been cancelled. It is our understanding that River Alexander Group, the event organizer, was unable to fund and produce the evening. The organizer came to The Goss-Michael Foundation, invited us to be the beneficiary and receive some of the proceeds which would have gone to our high school scholarship program."

A note at the bottom says this statement is the only comment there will be on the matter, although I'll try to find out about refunds, etc. Consider this just another blow to an already beleaguered Super Bowl week.

UPDATE: Uh, never mind. A follow-up statement from theEvent's publicity team says, "Circumstances have changed and TheEvent featuring Prince WILL take place this evening. The previous statement is rescinded. Prince has arrived in Dallas and will perform this evening." So ... there you go.

UPDATEx2: Pegasus News reporter Sarah Blaskovich writes that another publicist for theEvent says the first press release was sent prematurely and the concerns stemmed, in part, from whether band members could make it into town, given the horrid weather. In addition, Blaskovich reports that tickets are now two-for-one, so, for instance, the entry-level $1,500 ticket buys entrance for a pair, rather than just a single person. Those interested can purchase the deal by going to princedallas.com and entering the promo code "purple."
