Mommy mixologist: A showdown of Super Bowl booze

Posted 12:48pm on Wednesday, Feb. 09, 2011

As the Metroplex is descended upon by Cheeseheads and Terrible Towel wavers, we thought it fitting to have a Super Bowl cocktail showdown. No matter the outcome of the big game, these drinks will make for a super party on Sunday.

Showdown No. 1:

The Greentini vs. the

Black & Gold Martini

Greentini

2 ounces 360 Vodka

1 1/2 ounces melon liqueur

Shake ingredients with cracked ice and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with lemon.

Mix tip: For a bit more flavor, add an ounce of lemon juice and citrus soda.

Black & Gold Martini

2 ounces Three Olives Triple Shot Espresso Vodka

1 ounce Goldschläger

Pour vodka into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Top with Goldschläger.

Mix tip: If you love coffee with a hint of cinnamon, you will love this cocktail. Take caution, though: One of these is enough to get you through the whole game.

The winner: Although the colors of the Greentini perfectly represented Green Bay, the flavors of the Black & Gold martini pushed the Steelers-inspired drink into the end zone.

Showdown No. 2:

Green Machine vs. Steel Helmet

Green Machine

1 ounce Hpnotiq liqueur

5 to 6 ounces Mountain Dew

Pour Hpnotiq into a highball glass filled with ice cubes. Fill up with soda. Stir slightly; the drink will turn a bright green.

Mix tip: I added 2 ounces of Hpnotiq to balance the flavor from the Mountain Dew.

Steel Helmet

1 ounce vodka

1 ounce coffee liqueur

Milk

Galliano liqueur

Pour vodka and coffee liqueur into a rocks glass filled with ice. Top with milk. Add a layer of Galliano liqueur on top (pour it over the back of a spoon).

Mix tip: Lovers of White Russians and Colorado Bulldogs will like this creamy concoction.

The winner: The Pack is back in this face-off. The Steel Helmet held strong, but the Green Machine was the clear winner. (Bonus points: The caffeine from the Mountain Dew will get you pumped up for the halftime show.)

The beer blitz

Finally, if cocktails aren't your thing, Central Market has beers that will please fans on both sides of the field.

For Green Bay fans (brewed in Chippewa Falls, Wis.)

Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss: Extremely smooth honey tones will please the pickiest of light-beer drinkers at your party.

Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat: The surprising fruity flavors made this my favorite brew of the group. Add a lemon wedge to create a perfect team.

For Steelers fans (brewed in Downingtown, Pa.)

Victory Storm King Stout: A bit bitter for my taste, but if you love black coffee and lots of malt, you will down this in a second.

Victory HopDevil IPA: The extremely hoppy flavor of this beer made it my least favorite of the tasting. But if you like a lot of hops, this devil might tempt your taste buds.
