Behind bars: Meet Austin at Rahr & Sons Brewing Co.

Posted 11:57am on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011

Austin Heisch

Age: 23

Occupation: technical communicator/home brewer/bartender at Rahr & Sons Brewing Co. in Fort Worth

You tend bar twice a week at Rahr open house tours, but what else occupies your workweek?

I work as a technical communicator at a pharmacy software company named PDX. I write and maintain the update notes and help files. Other than that, I'm taking care of my home brewery, which is constantly bleeding over from hobby to job.

If home brewing were suddenly made illegal, would you still do it?

Probably. It's actually still illegal in a couple of states, but that doesn't stop people from home brewing or home-brewing shops from staying in business. Beer needs to be brewed!

Ever tended bar anywhere else?

I bartended my friend's wedding a few weeks ago. It was at the Rose Chapel, which was interesting, 'cause I don't think they're too keen on the booze. I served some home brew, and I had to convince 'em to let me bring my 5-gallon Cornelius kegs.

What's your favorite beer to make (and drink).

My favorite to drink is by far a good Weizen ... Hefeweizen ... Dunkel ... Weizenbock. I love me my wheat beers.

What seems to be the most popular beer in Rahr's lineup?

Other than whatever seasonal we have at the time, Ugly Pug or Strawberry Blonde (1/2 Blonde, 1/2 Red). Ugly Pug 'cause it's nice and roasty, but still really smooth and quenching. Tell me you don't want another pint after the first one? Strawberry Blonde 'cause it's light and crisp from the Blonde, but still nice and malty and sweet from the Red. The ladies love ordering this one. Guys, don't be shy -- it's delicious.

So, the rule at the Rahr open house is that each person gets three beers. Do you ever get people who try to swindle an extra brew?

Oh yeah, every time. We try to politely explain that they're paying for the tour and that the beers are complimentary. And that if they'd like to change the situation, they should contact the TABC about allowing packaging breweries to sell beer on the premises.

What other handy skills do you have besides bartending and brewing beer?

I can rub a kitty's belly like nobody's business.

Any New Year's (or should I say "Brew Year's") resolutions this year?

Remember to reuse yeast, haha. And floss after every meal.
