In case you missed it, the TCU Horned Frogs are set to play in the 2011 Rose Bowl, the 97th edition of the annual bowl game organized by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses organization. It will be their second consecutive appearance in a BCS Bowl game after coming up short in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl against Boise St.
Unless you are one of the fortunate ones heading out to California to watch the Frogs take on the Wisconsin Badgers, it will be imperative to find a watching party and soak in this historic event. Granted, it will be hard to find a local sports bar NOT showing the game on Jan. 1 at 4 p.m. Since I have been to most of these establishments (remember the 2010 Sports Bar Smackdown), I decided to shine a purple-shaded spotlight on a select few that I plan to check out.
RAHR & SONS BREWING CO. is hosting a game watching party. It is $7 to get in the door, but that includes complimentary Rahrs throughout the game. They will also have a special menu including a 1/2 lb Black Angus burger, a 1/4 all-beef hot dog, and gourmet quesadillas.
THE POUR HOUSE on West 7th will no doubt be packed all day as college football dominates the first day of 2011. In addition to the huge number of TCU fans, look for Texas Tech fans in the house as the Red Raiders play in the inaugural Ticket City Bowl at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas at 11 a.m. They have brunch from 11-3 including $2 MANmosas and $2 MANsettias.
8.0 BAR and RESTAURANT is hosting its "Purple Pride Party" with the doors opening at 3. They will feature purple beer and cocktails and will raffle off various Horned Frogs gear throughout the game. The big item up for raffle will be an Andy Dalton jersey signed by the team. Proceeds will go to Texas Rangers pitcher C.J. Wilson's Children's Charities.
ROCK BOTTOM BAR & GRILL is located just down the street from TCU on historic Bluebonnet Circle. If you are in the process of beginning a New Year's resolution of "Losing weight" you can munch on their Avocado Turkey Burger while cheering on the Frogs.
BONE DADDY'S HOUSE OF SMOKE in Grapevine is always the leader in the clubhouse when it comes to choosing a place to watch any game. All of the girls that work there are amazingly hot and no matter where you sit, there is a flatscreen angled in your direction.
WHISKEY AND RYE inside the Omni Fort Worth Hotel is another great spot to watch the game with their over-sized leather chairs and flatscreens everywhere you turn. Being in a luxury hotel, this should be a quite different crowd than the other options.
BAKER ST. PUB & GRILL on Camp Bowie in the Ridglea neighborhood is another place that will be full of Horned Frogs fans. If you are postponing your New Year's resolution until after the Rose Bowl, Baker St. is the place for you. The Watson's Chicken Tender Platter and their burgers will hit the spot.
There are entirely too many places to list them all, but this should help get you started in case your head is a little groggy when you roll out of bed after noon on New Year's Day. Happy 2011 everybody and Go Frogs!
