Fort Worth jazz singer to compete for $100,000 prize

Posted 4:22pm on Friday, Oct. 01, 2010

We try to tell you about all the talent in DFW, but sometimes is just too hard to keep up with all of the future stars.

Tatiana Mayfield is one of the folks we did tell you about, several times. The 23-year-old is one of the best local jazz voices period, and one of the nicest people you'll meet, too.

The recent UNT grad, who performs regularly at Scat Jazz Lounge and Buttons, is headed to Washington, D.C., this weekend to compete in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocals Competition. She is among 12 finalists who will perform for such big-name judges as Patti Austin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kurt Elling, Aretha Franklin, Al Jarreau and Dianne Reeves.

Three finalists will be chosen and the top prize, which is worth $100,000 (including a scholarship and a guaranteed recording contract) will be awarded Monday at the Kennedy Center.

We'll be rooting hard for Tatiana. Good luck!

Win or lose, it's right back to work in DFW for Tatiana, who plays Oct. 7 at the Dallas Museum of Art's Jazz in the Atrium series. She has gigs at Buttons on Oct. 17 and Scat Jazz Oct. 23.
