DALLAS -- Daniel Tosh may be Comedy Central's latest late-night "it" guy, but no one's going to confuse him with the network's other bedtime stars, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. After all, it's doubtful that Congress -- which recently listened to Colbert discuss immigration -- would host anyone as soul-crushingly cynical as Tosh.
But that's exactly what the crowd at the first of two packed shows at the Majestic Theater wanted Thursday night. The performances were part of a major American tour made possible by the success of the series Tosh.0, sort of an America's Funniest Home Videos for the YouTube generation with Tosh as its wiseguy host.
Tosh is like the guy next door who can always be counted on for the wicked cutting remark and clever put-down.
He immediately set the tone Thursday when he went after the audience for yelling out spontaneously and even tossed in digs at himself ("I'm not good live, heads up.")
From there, he slalomed for just over an hour among subjects including high school graduations, the Olympics, the Founding Fathers, California's Proposition 8, Michael Jackson's dad and abortion. Tosh had a problem with flow as he jumped from topic to topic, and some jokes didn't quite hit the mark. (It didn't help that he was having microphone issues, which seemed to throw him off a bit.)
But, fortunately, most were hilariously right on target, even if they sometimes solicited more groans than laughs.
Still, for all his bratty political incorrectness and bleak observations ("Do you hope the world ends as much as I do?"), Tosh never felt particularly dangerous or astutely visionary.
He's just a guy with a funny little TV show and a big bag of snark, and he knows how to use them.
