Behind bars: the Yucatan Taco Stand's Vic Gonzalez

Posted 11:26am on Wednesday, Sep. 15, 2010

Vic from Yucatan Taco Stand

Name: Vic Gonzalez

Age: 40

Occupation: Bartender at Yucatan Taco Stand and Tequila Bar in Fort Worth

What makes a good tequila good and a bad tequila bad? Whether it stays down or not would be the obvious answer. Also a good tequila will make you feel good all night, a bad tequila will make you feel bad all week.

You work in a bar that also has great food ... what's your favorite thing on the menu? The chile relleno -- damn, it's good. But if you've never been here, order the nachos. You will not be disappointed.

Is your bartending style more "frozen" or "on the rocks"? I am not the cool, smooth-talking bartender. Definitely on the rocks. I have so many people ask for shots I don't know how to make, so I just wing it and get creative.

What's the real story behind there being a worm in a bottle of tequila? Do you eat the worm? Technically there is no worm in tequila -- that would be mescal. And honestly I have no idea what would possess someone to order it or even seriously think about eating the worm. Supposedly, if you eat the worm you are supposed to hallucinate. Of course, if you're at the bottom of the bottle, you should expect to be seeing at least double, if not triple, don't ya think? As for me eating the worm, if I eat something that gross, there better be a prize waiting for me at the end.

If you were a vampire and had a "pass" to go outside for one day, where would you go and what would you do? I would go to the Yucatan Peninsula, specifically Cancun, with a lot of friends and do all the things that you do when you are at a tropical resort.

If you could serve any celebrity at your bar, who would you want it to be and what would you talk about? I think I'd like Osama Bin Laden to walk in and order a drink. I would give it to him, jump over the bar and beat the crap out of him and turn him in for the reward and be a national hero. Either him or Scarlett Johansson, but I think that would go way differently.

What's your most requested or "signature" drink? Lately it has been the Threesome or the Dirty Sanchez. I don't know what it is about drinks with dirty names that people just have to have them. People don't even care what is in the drink, they just want to order it because they think it's shocking.

If you could become famous for doing something that you don't currently do, what would it be? Find a cure for Alzheimer's.

And finally, can tequila really make your clothes fall off? Yes. This is not an old wives' tale. I've seen it happen on way too many occasions. People like to blame this kind of thing on tequila -- you never hear anybody say: "Oh my God, that beer or wine made me act all crazy last night."
