Don't miss Maria Bamford in Fort Worth

Posted 11:25pm on Friday, Sep. 10, 2010

My face hurts ... from laughing so hard Friday night at the Fort Worth Cultural Arts Center. That's where Maria Bamford, one of the funniest people on the planet, performed to a crowd of about 100 people.

I'd only seen a couple of Bamford's video clips on the interwebs, but thank goodness my wife knows funny -- hey, she married me, right. (Ba dum, dum.) And she suggested we get a babysitter and laugh our asses off on a Friday night. And so we did.

I'm not going to attempt to explain or describe Bamford's brand of humor, other than to say it is purely original. Nothing she said or did on Friday was predictable, except for her hilarious parody of the typical female comedian. She is definitely not that. Her array of inner-voices and sideways satire on everything from cooking shows to Christianity raise your sense of humor IQ, just by listening closely.

So make plans to attend one of Bamford's two remaining Cowtown shows Saturday night at 7 and 9 p.m. You'll be glad you did.

Tickets are $25, but the beer and wine are on the house thanks to No 2 Drink Minimum, the Fort Worth promoter who was smart enough to bring Bamford to town. E-mail no2drinkminimum@gmail.com for reservations, but be warned Saturday is also gallery night, so send that e-mail soon.

And while you're over at the FWCAC, stop into Jazz by the Boulevard. We caught the last half of Trombone Shorty's show Friday night and his rendition of Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On was sweaty hot. Saturday's lineup of local and national music acts are pretty awesome for only $5. Hope to see ya there.
