First Friday at the Modern
Here's a great way to get into the fall mood, on the first First Friday of September. The Modern Cafe is closed for renovation, but later this month, it'll reopen, with a new martini bar. Here's where you can get a preview, and a taste of this month's special cocktail: Back to Cool. While you're there, check out the Magnolia film screening, the latest from Alain Resnais, Wild Grass, which comes about 50 years after his debut feature, Hiroshima Mon Amour.

Bedford Blues & BBQ
3 This event has been going on long enough that it's considered a Labor Day weekend staple in North Texas, even if the name has changed several times. Fort Woof
Mayoral Race
4 While we'd never condone buying an election, in this case, it's perfectly legal. Nominate your pooch online, or donate money to other nominees, and maybe he or she will be crowned Mayor of Fort Woof. Think of it as Citizen Canine.
When; Nominations and votes taken online through Oct. 9, the day of the park's big Barktoberfest.
Where: Fort Woof is at Gateway Park (Beach Street and Interstate 30), east of downtown Fort Worth
Cost: Minimum donation $1

Adam Lambert
5 He might not outclass Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood in the American Idol record sales department (Whaddaya want from him?), but Glambert is arguably Idol's most fabulous alum. We're also tickled about his opener: Season 8 buddy Allison Iraheta, the little one with the massive rock voice.
When: 8 p.m. Tuesday
Where: Palladium Ballroom, 1135 S. Lamar St., Dallas
Cost: $39.50

Revelation: The Art of
James Magee
6 Since the Nasher Sculpture Center opened, it probably hasn't showcased an artist as diverse as James Magee. This sculptor uses materials such as glass, concrete, iron, wax, lead, wire mesh, linoleum, grease, brake fluid, shellac, car parts, ceramic tiles and roof panels for his work. Just for fun, he throws in more organic components, like hibiscus, honey or paprika. This is the first major exhibition of the El Paso artist's work in 18 years.
When: Saturday through Nov. 28
Where: Nasher Sculpture Center, 2001 Flora St., Dallas
Cost: $7-$10
Info: www.nashersculpturecenter.org
TCU vs. Oregon State at Cowboys Stadium
7 The Horned Frogs came sooo close last year. So this game, early in the season, should be a big draw for North Texans, and not just people with TCU allegiances. Plus, it's in Jerry World, and slightly cheaper than tickets for Cowboys games. Hut, hut, hut!
When: 6:45 p.m. Saturday
Where: Dallas Cowboys Stadium, Arlington
Cost: $45-$150

The 4 Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring the Beatles
8 Sulllivan was groundbreaking for American TV, and so was that little foursome from across the pond, just watch this two-DVD set and see. If you think Justin Beiber's fans are out of control, wait until you get a load of how '60s-era teeny-boppers swooned for Paul.
When: Tuesday
Where: Online and at music/bookstores
Cost: $19.98

World Adult Kickball Association
9 Don't you love that the acronym -- WAKA. It's also an onomatopoeia for the sound made when a foot knocks the heck out of a kickball ball. The Cowtown leg of this organization begins games later this month, but sign up now. And follow it on Twitter: WakaFortWorth.
When: Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Sept. 23 or 28
Where: The Storm and Panther leagues play at Gateway Park (I-30 and Beach Street); the West Side league plays at Z Boaz Park (off U.S. 377 S near Benbrook).
Cost: $70 per player. Register online as a free agent, or put together a team. Fee covers fields, equipment, jersey, bar specials and two parties with free alcohol. (Another thing to love about adults playing kickball.)

'Circus Salome'
10 Oscar Wilde's play Salome ranks as one of the most scandalous ever (even Richard Strauss' opera version turned some heads, heh heh). David Yaekle, of Austin's Tongue and Groove Theatre, has re-imagined the erotic play as a circus act for Hip Pocket Theatre (where Yaekle worked before creating his own theater in the Hill Country). Herod is the ringmaster, and the titular princess is an aerialist. Easily looks like the most interesting show on HPT's season, and that's saying something.
When: Friday through Sept. 26
Where: Silver Creek Amphitheatre, 1950 Silver Creek Road, Fort Worth
Cost: $5-$15
Info: www.hippocket.org
Mustang Steve's Birthday Bash VII

Cost: $5 for park admission fee

Budweiser Superfest
12 Terrific neo-soul lineup here: Anthony Hamilton, Kem, Raheem DeVaughn, Jaheim, Abraham McDonald, Hal Linton and Tiffany Evans. If you leave this show and don't want to have sex with the one who brung you, then you weren't grooving to the music.
