The Dirty Dozen: Go for Baroque or take '39 Steps'

Posted 3:18pm on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010

Aug. 26-Sept. 1

Great Performances Festival: A Baroque Celebration

The baroque era is when classical music -- which would have just been called "music" back then -- expanded into more intricate territory. The Fort Worth Symphony kicks off its 2010-'11 season with a celebration of Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Purcell and others of the era. Also expect to hear some South American composers, under the baton of music director Miguel Harth-Bedoya.

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Where: Bass Hall, 330 E. Fourth St., Fort Worth

Cost: $16-$65

Info: www.fwsymphony.org

Green Day

2 What do you do if you're one of the best rock bands of the past two decades and then have a hit, Tony-nominated Broadway musical based on one of your albums? You keep touring and rocking out, that's what. The Great White Way hasn't ruined the trio's street cred, not even by one safety pin. Catch 'em this week, with AFI.

When: 7 p.m. Thursday

Where: Superpages.com Center, Dallas

Cost: $20-$85

Info: www.ticketmaster.com

'The 39 Steps'

3 Hitchcock's films have been adapted for the stage before, but nothing that's as brilliantly funny as this Patrick Barlow farce, inspired by the Master of Suspense's 1935 film. The trick: Four actors play dozens of roles from the film, and there are clever references to almost every other Hitchcock film. More fun than being chased by a flock of eye-gouging birds.

When: Saturday through Sept. 26

Where: Stage West, 821 W. Vickery Blvd., Fort Worth

Cost: $24-$28

Info: www.stagewest.org

DFW Pug Rescue Garage Sale

4 We know there are tons of charities out there to support, but how can you pass up a chance to help those adorable little doggies with the smooshy faces? Plus, you might discover a funky find, or something you actually need, like a bicycle. If you need motivation, imagine one of those pug faces looking at you with its sad googly eyes.

When: 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday

Where: Fun Time Bingo, 628 W. Pipeline Road, Hurst

Cost: depends on your treasure-hunting skills

Fiery Pool: The Maya and the Mythic Sea

If the world's going to end on Dec. 21, 2012, as the ancient Mayan calendar tells us, you might as well spend your last year taking a gander at the crafts from the culture that predicted it. This new Kimbell exhibit features some 90 objects excavated from Mayan ruins, from large stone carvings to items crafted from gold, jade and turquoise. Oh, and go to the museum's website and play the Glymph Game; it's like Memory except using Mayan symbols.

When: Sunday through Jan. 2

Where: Kimbell Art Museum, 3333 Camp Bowie Blvd., Fort Worth

Cost: $12 adults; $10 students with ID and seniors; $8 ages 6-11

Info: www.kimbellart.org

Endeavor Cinema

6 What's it going to take to get more filmmakers to stay in Texas? More events like this. The Endeavor Cinema Group presents "Ignite Your Cinergy," in which local filmmakers and film watchers can mingle and catch local work. At this function: Screenings of David L. Brehm's Balaam Gimble's Gumption (www.balaamgimblesgumption.com) and Frank Mosley's Hold (www.holdthefilm.com).

When: 6-10 p.m. Saturday

Where: Four Day Weekend Theater, 312 Houston St., Fort Worth

Cost: free, with cash bar

Info: 817-226-4329

'Bitches Brew'

reissue

7 If you think rock 'n' roll's roots are best summed up through Chuck Berry, Elvis and the Beatles, then you're not in touch with Miles Davis. The jazzman had as much influence on popular music in the latter half of the 20th century as Hendrix did. One of Davis' landmark albums, Bitches Brew, is being reissued this week. The "legacy edition" features a remastered version on two CDs, plus a DVD. That's for just more than $20, but if want to wait a few more weeks, the 40th anniversary collector's edition (three CDs, DVD, vinyl) comes out Sept. 14.

When: online and in stores

Cost: legacy edition, $23; 40th anniversary collector's edition, $125

Bowling for Soup

8 These Denton rockers aren't one of our favorite bands just because DFW.com'er Rick Press has bowled with them. We're intoxicated by their goofy energy, their odes to mopeds and My Wena. It doesn't hurt that they sing the theme song to Phineas and Ferb, one of the coolest kids' shows on the TV. Catch 'em this weekend as they roll through the Metroplex with two gigs.

When: doors open at 7:30 Friday and Saturday

Where: Friday at The Basement (2521 Rodeo Plaza in the Fort Worth Stockyards); Saturday in Dallas at The Prophet Bar (2548 Elm St.)

Cost: $15 online; $20 at the door

Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two-Woman Show

9 Multiple personalities don't get much better than Vicki Lawrence, whose best-known character, Mama, is probably more famous than the creator herself. Rising to fame in the legendary The Carol Burnett Show, Lawrence is traveling the country with her "two-woman" show. In the first half, she's Vicki. In the second half, she is that lovably cantankerous Mama, who should have some hilarious insight on current politics. The event is part of Casa Mañana's "Laugh With a Legend" gala.

When: 8:45 p.m. Saturday

Where: Casa Mañana Theatre, 3101 W. Lancaster Ave., Fort Worth

Cost: $75 show only (for dinner and reception packages, check prices online)

Info: www.casamanana.org

62nd Emmy Awards

10 Awards, red carpet-gawking and Jimmy Fallon hosting. All fun. But we're fixated on this year's recipient of the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award: George Clooney. All hail His Clooniness.

When: 7 p.m.

Where: NBC/Channel 5

Info: www.emmys.tv

The Women's Expo

11 Think of this as Girls' Night Out, only during the daytime and in one of the country's largest exhibition halls. This 21st annual event features booths about fashion, food, entertainment, cosmetics, travel and free health and beauty screenings. All of which translate to one of everybody's favorite things: shopping.

When: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday

Where: Dallas Market Hall, 2200 N. Stemmons Freeway

Cost: $10 per day; $16 for a two-day pass

Info: www.visionsexpo.com/visions/index.html

Gershwin Favorites with Marvin Hamlisch

One of America's favorite pop composers, Marvin Hamlisch, is the new principal pops conductor for the Dallas Symphony, and he begins his three-show stint this season with a tribute to another American great: George Gershwin. The three-show concert also kicks off the DSO's season.

When: 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Sunday

Where: Meyerson Symphony Center, 230 Flora St., Dallas

Cost: $22-$117
