I love really bad movies. The more I can make fun of, the better. Tommy Wiseau's The Room is as bad as they come.
It's considered by many critics and regular people as the worst film of all time. They're right. It's not just bad -- it's so dreadful it transcends our plane of existence. It's like an interstellar level of crappiness.
Released in 2003, The Room is an independent drama about a love triangle between Johnny (played by Wiseau), his pseudo-fiance; Lisa, and their allegedly heterosexual best friend Mark.
The acting stinks, the dialogue is poorly written, and the sets look cheap. The lighting's not too bad, though.
Despite being almost a decade old, it's amassed a huge following. People everywhere are coming together at midnight screenings just to get a glimpse of The Room. Who wouldn't want to? It's a part of cinematic history -- whether we like it or not.
Manuals for the movie have popped up all over the Internet -- guides that tell you what to bring, what to say, and when to say it. (For starters, check out A Viewer's Guide To The Room.)
Of course this immediately invites comparisons to The Rocky Horror Picture Show -- but The Room is cheesier.
And like Rocky Horror, don't bank on actually watching the movie. You'll be too busy laughing yourself into an aneurysm thanks to the snippy one-liners, courtesy of the audience around you. Have a drink or two before the show and be ready to make a contribution as well.
Catch the next show at the Inwood Theatre in Dallas, at midnight on August 27th and 28th. I'll be in the audience, howling my head off.
