Bumped into Telegraph Canyon ringleader Chris Johnson on my way out of Casa Manana tonight. Although the band is not quite as active 'round these parts, Johnson says the Canyon clan isn't taking it easy at all this summer. Safely ensconced in a new, "big-ass" rehearsal space (Johnson says the band is working on getting a pinball machine installed), the plans are coming together for the band to do something rather unique.
Amid booked studio time, songwriting for the follow-up to last year's The Tide and the Current and his own work with side project Pelicanstate, Johnson told me Telegraph Canyon is planning to host an invitation-only acoustic performance at its rehearsal space later this year, with producer Britton Beisenherz recording the whole affair for posterity. "We'll rehearse for two days, record the third with an audience, press it and put it out," he says. The plan, according to Johnson, is to release a split seven-inch vinyl at some point, ahead of a new Telegraph Canyon album. "Between now and March ... whoo," he says, with a grin on his face.
I take that to mean, for all Telegraph Canyon has accomplished to date, the Fort Worthians are just getting warmed up.
