Knox-Henderson Avenue bar scene is worth the trip, too

Posted 12:28pm on Thursday, Jul. 15, 2010

The Knox-Henderson Avenue corridor isn't just about shopping. Increasingly, it's also about bar-hopping, especially on the Henderson side of Central Expressway all the way to Ross Avenue. In the past year, it has become the heir to nearby Greenville Avenue and Deep Ellum, and a rival to Uptown, in terms of cool bars and eateries --though there are no live-music venues yet. Here are some of the places to scope out the next time you make the drive over.

Barcadia, 1917 N. Henderson Ave., 214-821-7300; www.barcadiadallas.com

What makes this bar stand out is not just the food, which is way better than bar food has a right to be, but the vintage '80s-era video games that line the walls. And on Tuesday nights, the games are free. Score!

Capitol Pub, 2401 N. Henderson Ave., 214-887-9330; www.capitolpubdallas.com

With its old-school feel on the inside, this seems more like a traditional bar than some of the other new places along the street.

Hacienda on Henderson, 2326 N. Henderson Ave., 214-515-9190; www.haciendaonhenderson.com

If you're craving quesadillas at midnight and the local fast-food drive-in won't do, where are you going to go? This Mexican place stays open late for the post-bar/club crowd.

J. Black's Feel Good Lounge, 2409 N. Henderson Ave., 214-613-2525; www.jblacks.com

The well-known Austin bar recently opened this Dallas outpost. Though it has become quite the people-watching hangout, the atmosphere -- with its large patios -- is still pretty casual.

Park, 1921 N. Henderson Ave., 214-824-3343; www.parkhenderson.com

Dallas chef Marc Cassel (formerly of the Green Room) opened this upscale but casual eatery last summer. The bar, which opens onto a patio, offers a prime spot to watch the Henderson people parade, especially on weekend nights.

The Pearl Cup, 1900 N. Henderson Ave., 214-824-9500; www.thepearlcup.com

Some Dallasites swear that this espresso bar/coffeehouse has the best java in the city. I'm not a coffee drinker, but it's still a nice, chill place to hang for a while between shopping sprints.

Victor Tango's, 3001 N. Henderson Ave., 214-252-8595; www.victortangos.com

Come for the chicken 'n' waffles. Stay for the yuppie preening.
