A heaping helping of news & reviews from DFW’s dining scene.
Signs in D Jay's Kountry Kitchen announce, "God is good!"
D Jay's diners are definitely blessed.
The tiny soul food takeout counter on a back road east of Loop 820 serves homemade peach cobbler, plus lunch choices of 10 meats, 12 vegetables and salads.
It's mostly a to-go shop with about five tables. The service can be overwhelmed when busy.
But don't let the lack of ambience detract from the fried catfish or smothered chicken, or vegetables such as yams or collard greens.
Lunch specials ($8-$9) one day this week included catfish, chicken-fried steak, turkey wings, smothered pork chops or baked chicken.
D Jay's is open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. It's at 7403 John T. White Road; 817-496-2281.
(If you like D Jay's, you might also like Madea's Down Home Cooking, 1019 W. Enon Ave., Everman; Drew's Place, 5701 Curzon Ave., Fort Worth, www.drewssoulfood.com; and John Carter's Place, 5309 E. Lancaster Ave., Fort Worth, www.johncartersplace.com/.)
Joe T. Garcia's celebrated 75 years Sunday.
But do you know about the secret menu?
Joe T.'s serves an extensive menu at lunch. But servers at night usually offer "fajitas or the family dinner"?
There's more:
Ask for chicken enchiladas. They're made with chicken fajitas, like the ranchero enchiladas Monterrey at Esperanza's next door.
Or ask for chili sauce on the cheese or chicken enchiladas. Or try chile con queso.
Add a half-order of "Joe's" fajita nachos. Ask if chiles rellenos or flautas are available.
And try the "Martin" margarita.
The best time to experiment at Joe T.'s is at lunch or brunch. It opens at 11 a.m. daily; 2201 N. Commerce St., 817-626-4356, www.joets.com.
