Classic burger shop Kincaid's isn't afraid of chicken

Posted 1:25pm on Sunday, Jun. 27, 2010

Kincaid's Hamburgers rarely changes, and customers like it that way.

But sometimes, Kincaid's changes for the better.

The 43-year-old Fort Worth hamburger icon has added an ancho grilled chicken sandwich to its menu, along with a new grilled-jalapeño-and-onion burger "Cowtown-style."

"Cowtown-style" is really "Lynn-style," the favorite toppings of co-owner Lynn Gentry.

Her husband, Ron, said the burger has been Kincaid's "secret menu" item.

"It's always been sort of an underground favorite," said Gentry, co-owner of the burger grill at 4901 Camp Bowie Blvd. in Fort Worth.

Kincaid's grilled chicken replaces an Italian chicken sandwich that faded off the menu.

The new sandwich is a better grade of chicken, and the ancho seasoning isn't oily, Gentry said.

Kincaid's also restored an all-beef corny dog to the menu, along with banana pudding that was a throwback to the original grocery.

" Another old Fort Worth favorite has a new look.

Mi Cocinita, the tiny backyard Tex-Mex cafe in a residential neighborhood near Interstate 35W, is now serving Sunday breakfast and lunch.

Niece Lucy Mendez runs the kitchen now, and aunt Virgie Martinez helps on Sundays.

Mi Cocinita is open at midday only, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. Sundays; 3509 Bryan Ave., 817-923-0033.

Cafe Modern will get a new look in September.

The lunch cafe inside the Modern Art Museum will serve through July into mid-August, then take off most of September for remodeling and reopen with a new cocktail bar and regular Friday-night dinner hours.

Chef Dena Peterson described the plan as "more upscale, more of a Friday-night date destination." Cafe Modern has been successful at monthly First Friday parties. (The next is July 2.)

J&J Oyster Bar, a Fort Worth landmark in the Cultural District, is now open in Burleson.

The new location offers an $8.75 catfish lunch with an entree and chowder or gumbo, and grilled tuna, snapper or salmon dinners for $9-$12. It's open daily for lunch and dinner at 125 W. Bufford St.; 817-295-9600.
