Eats Beat: Finding food near Colonial

Posted 3:21pm on Saturday, May. 29, 2010

On Colonial golf weekend, everybody wants to know about new restaurants and what's hot.

This year, the news is what's cold.

Ice cream, frozen yogurt and gelato have settled into the new shops along both South University Drive and West Seventh Street, giving families somewhere to chill after a long afternoon at the club:

Menchie's Frozen Yogurt, a California-based chain from the San Fernando Valley, has two stores in all of Texas and one is in University Park Village near Colonial.

Menchie's sells yogurt with your own twist -- because you serve yourself all the flavors, toppings, sauces and fresh fruit you want and then pay by weight; 1620 S. University Drive, 817-332-9866, open daily 11 a.m.-11 p.m. and weekends till midnight, menchies.com.

Sweet Sammies Cookies & Ice Cream is a family-owned shop offering fresh-baked cookies and premium ice cream -- either separately or as a fresh-packed, premium ice cream sandwich for $1.75.

Sweet Sammies bakes cookies in 12 flavors and matches them with 12 flavors of Blue Bell ice cream. Cookies cost 45 cents and ice cream costs $1, so this isn't a pricey stop; 825 Currie St. in the West 7th shops, 817-332-0022, open daily 10 a.m.-9 p.m. and weekends till 10, www.sweetsammies.com.

Paciugo Gelato & Caffé of Dallas is also new in the West 7th shops.

New "Food Network Flavors" include bacon gelato, plus others such as banana-cashew or chocolate-chipotle-pecan; 2926 Crockett St., 817-885-7725, open daily 11 a.m.-10 p.m. and weekends till 11, www.paciugo.com.

Near Colonial, watch for McKinley's Fine Bakery & Café to move into a larger space near the Apple Store later this summer.

For now, McKinley's is an ideal family Colonial stop-off: a sandwich cafe and sweets bakery, tucked into the southwest corner of University Park Village.

Summer features include a new turkey-mandarin-orange salad; 1612 S. University Drive, 817-332-3242, open weekdays and Saturdays 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m., Sundays 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; www.mckinleysbakery.com.

Serious golf fans will gather in the usual steakhouses and beer stops:

Bailey's Prime Plus steakhouse can be a stop for Saturday or Sunday burger lunch or prime-beef dinner; 2901 Crockett St., 817-870-1100, www.baileysprimeplus.com.

Eddie V's Prime Seafood is heavily booked on Saturday but remains the west side's busiest lounge and fine-dining stop; 3100 W. Seventh St., 817-336-8000, www.eddiev.com.

Mac's on 7th is one of golf writer Dan Jenkins' favorite chicken-fried steak havens, and also opens for both lunch and dinner; 2600 W. Seventh St., 817-332-6227, macsteak.com.
