Eats Beat: Plenty of dining places, besides buffets, will make Mom happy

Posted 3:04pm on Friday, May. 07, 2010

Mom deserves the best.

But does that always mean a buffet?

The hotel buffets are mostly booked Sunday. If you still want a buffet, go to Vance Godbey's Sunday dinner house near Lake Worth, a tradition for 55 years; 8601 Jacksboro Highway, 817-237-2218, www.vancegodbeys.com.

But how about a fine-dining restaurant?

Most of the prime steakhouses are open.

So is La Piazza, the very elegant Italian restaurant.

La Piazza's seafood and pastas are first-rate. It's the perfect place for a fine-dining Sunday lunch.

Book a reservation. And ask about the dress code; 1600 S. University Drive, 817-334-0000, www.lapiazzafw.com.

Or try one of the great neighborhood Italian restaurants like Sardines in Fort Worth or La Bistro in Hurst.

Sardines is open every Sunday and serves bargain lunches starting at $7; 509 University Drive, 817-332-9937, sardinesftworth.com.

La Bistro has been around 30 years; 722 Grapevine Highway, 817-281-9333, labistroitalian.com.

Weatherford is full of good dining deals.

Like Wanda's

Wanda's is an old-school cafe reopening after a fire.

Lunch costs $6, or about $9 with a salad, drink and tax.

Wanda Ogle and Junior Crooks' cafe is also known for big breakfasts and all-you-can-eat catfish or sirloin plates.

Wanda's opens every morning at 5 and stays open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

It's on Fort Worth Highway east of the Mesquite Pit steakhouse and La Playa Maya; 1503 Fort Worth Highway, 817-599-7421.

Another country cafe is celebrating.

Ginger Brown's in Lake Worth will mark 25 years Friday with $5 specials and a cinnamon roll-eating contest.

Ginger Brown's is an old-time cafe and bakery. If you order coconut meringue pie, you get your own mini-pie.

The special Mondays and Thursdays is a chicken-fried steak dinner for $5.

Look for Ginger Brown's one block west of Loop 820 at 6312 Lake Worth Blvd.; 817-237-2114.

More new openings:

Boo-Ray's, one of the best local Cajun restaurants, will open a second location next month at 7255 Boat Club Road in the Lake Country neighborhood of northwest Fort Worth.

The original is at 3039 Fort Worth Highway, Hudson Oaks; www.boo-rays.com.

The Original Pancake House, an Oregon-based chain, will open in June in Grapevine; 1505 William D. Tate Ave., www.originalpancakehousedallas.com.
