Faith Hill in Fort Worth: The party of the weekend

Posted 4:08pm on Monday, Mar. 08, 2010

The place to be on Saturday was Bass Performance Hall in downtown Fort Worth. It was the site of the first of the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee's "Kick-Off Concert Series. Super Bowl XLV" will be played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on February 6, 2011, exactly 11 months away.

This particular evening featured Faith Hill in concert. Sting will perform in the second concert on May 22 in Dallas. The third (featuring an artist yet to be named) will take place in September at Cowboys Stadium.

The evening had a glamorous feel; it was also a great place to take a date who just happens to be a HUGE Faith Hill fan. Local luminaries including Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief, legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman were all on hand.

Bass Hall has a seating capacity of 2,056 and this concert had a full house. However, it still managed to have the atmosphere of a private event. Troy Aikman and his FOX broadcast partner Joe Buck served up as emcees. As for the headliner, she put on a classic "Greatest Hits" show. She paused early on to note, "This place feels intimate" -- when you routinely play large arenas, presumably the Bass feels like your living room.

During one of the more charming sections of the show, she even stopped and took questions to the audience. The questions ranged from "What is your favorite Frito Lay chip?" (Frito Lay was the evening's presenting sponsor) to "Can you say hi to my grandmother on the phone in Mississippi?" For the latter, Hill got the entire crowd involved to say "Hi Ma" in unison.

We hung around after to soak up this Hollywood-esque scene and watched the local celebrities gather their Bentleys and Mercedes from valet, I caught a glimpse of WFAA sports anchor Dale Hansen. I tried to explain to my date who he was, and how I was a big fan.

"I know who he is," she said. "That's the guy that is always taking shots at the weatherman."

It was just a great night all around. I can't wait for the Sting concert in May to see what the Host Commitee and emcees Joe Buck and Troy Aikman have instore.

And just like that, we were off into the night of Sundance Square.
