A heaping helping of news & reviews from DFW’s dining scene.
Eagerly anticipating the opening of a new barbecue place on Fort Worth's Eighth Avenue, we went knocking on the door at City Pig a few days too early. The busy-as-bees workers said we'd have to wait until Tuesday, and we promised to return.
So where to satisfy the lunchtime hunger in the meantime? We went back to an old favorite, Carshon's Deli on Cleburne Road, not far from TCU.
You'd be hard pressed to find a sandwich more rewarding than The Rachel. This biggie piles a third-pound of corned beef and turkey with melted Swiss, cole slaw and Russian dressing, on grilled, buttery rye for $6.95.
I wanted to be a smidge more virtuous, so I had a half-sandwich, the corned beef and Swiss on toasted rye, with a cup of split pea soup, for less than $10.
My friend, unable to resist the divine pies, insisted on dessert. The pies are made in house daily, baked about an hour before lunch service begins. We got a big slice of the chocolate meringue, still a bit warm. It's so good, that we even spotted Fort Worth celeb and novelist Dan Jenkins a few tables over, digging into a slice, too.
We always eager to try a new place, but Carshon's makes a good fallback, any day.
