It used to be virtually impossible to see the films nominated for Best Animated Short and Best Live Action short -- until a few years ago, when a company called Shorts International began putting together compilation programs and releasing them into theaters. This year's installment arrives in Fort Worth just in time for the big night. Both the animated and live-action programs are screening at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Friday though Sunday. (Might we suggest going to the 4 p.m. screening on Sunday, and then hanging around for our Oscar party? Just a thought...)
The animated program features films from Ireland, France and Spain, though the contest is expected to come down to two very different efforts: Logorama, a satire set in a Los Angeles that's composed entirely of corporate logos, and A Matter of Loaf and Death, the latest short featuring the beloved claymation characters Wallace and Gromit. Considering that Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park has four previous Oscars, you'd be unwise to bet against him. The animated program screens Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sun. at 2 p.m.
The live-action short Oscar is trickier to predict. Voters might opt for the weightier titles, including the Irish entry The Door (about the aftermath of Chernobyl) and the Indian entry Kavi (about child slavery). That said, our money is on either the Australian film Miracle Fish, which was a big hit at Sundance in 2009, or an American-Danish co-production called The New Tenants, starring Vincent D'Onofrio and Kevin Corrigan. The live-action program screens Friday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m.
