John Prine
Although singer-songwriter John Prine isn't from the Lone Star State (he hails from Illinois), it often feels like the 63-year-old is an honorary Texan. So many homegrown talents -- from Kris Kristofferson to Lyle Lovett -- cite Prine as a major influence that his work has been fiercely embraced as Texan in spirit. While Prine hasn't released an album in three years ( Standard Songs for Average People, 2007's collaboration with bluegrass whiz Mac Wiseman), he has nearly 40 years' worth of material to pull from.
