Rahr weathering storm, still holding tastings

Posted 5:18pm on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010

Fort Worth’s only microbrewery, Rahr & Son’s, is getting the remnants of its snow-collapsed roof removed, a three- or four-day process that will finally reveal the full extent of damage to brewing equipment, owner Fritz Rahr told us.

The good news is that upwards of 20,000 gallons of artisanal lagers and ales are doing well.

“The tanks are holding temperature and will as long as we don’t have extreme weather,” he told us.

The cooling lines and the old Italian-made bottling machine appear damaged. Just how much the bottler suffered will be determined this week when some specialists survey the equipment, Rahr said.

There might be a chance to fill kegs directly from the tanks, he said.

Meanwhile, the brewery is scrambling to find venues to hold its twice weekly tastings. A hastily organized event at the new Cooper’s barbecue in the Stockyards drew more than 100 people the Saturday immediately after the Feb. 11 snowmageddon.

A tasting this Wednesday is planned 5 to 7 p.m. at Firehouse Gallery, 4147 Meadowbrook Dr., on Fort Worth’s east side. Aside from Fritz Rahr, brewers Auston Jones and Jason Lyon will be on hand to give an update on the brewery’s recovery.

Artist (and gallery co-owner) Keith Thomson will discuss his current exihibit of photographs and three sculptures that were inspired by them.
