Eats Beat: Chef Point in Watauga is offering sweet deals on Sunday

Posted 5:49pm on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010

Stumped for a Valentine's plan?

Why not take your sweetheart to the Conoco station?

I'm not kidding. Chef Point Cafe, the "calamari Conoco" featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, is open Sunday and serving a special menu.

Chef Franson Nwaeze is cooking a tenderloin-and-lobster special ($39), lollipop lamb chops ($21) or a choice of duck, prime rib or chicken Oscar.

Chef Point is a gourmet cafe inside a gas-station diner, known for burgers, steaks, rack of lamb and bread pudding in bourbon sauce.

It's open daily; 5901 Watauga Road, Watauga, 817-656-0080; www.chefpointcafe.org.

Cafe Ashton decided to serve Valentine's dinner after all, so you might luck out for a reservation Sunday night.

Cafe Ashton, the cozy dining room inside the boutique Ashton Hotel, joins other steakhouses and fine-dining restaurants opening Sunday.

The Ashton offers filet mignon, chicken with garlic risotto or salmon and shrimp with a champagne-cream sauce, $49. The hotel is at 610 Main St., Fort Worth, 817-332-0100; www.theashtonhotel.com.

(For other ideas, check past columns at www.dfw.com/eatsbeat or search for a table at www.opentable.com.)

The sweet life doesn't have to end Sunday.

After Valentine's, there's one final splurge: the Sweethearts Dessert Fantasy, a charity dessert festival Feb. 21 at the Fort Worth Club.

More than 20 restaurants will serve their best desserts, including Grand Marnier white chocolate mousse from Bonnell's Fine Texas Cuisine and red velvet chocolate-cinnamon Fireball cupcakes from Tillman's Roadhouse; $35-$150, lenapopehome.org.

Oklahoma's famous fried pies have come to Weatherford.

The Fried Pie Shoppe of Davis, Okla., has opened inside Baker's Ribs in what promises to become a barbecue-and-fried-pie empire for business partners Nancy "The Fried Pie Lady" Fulton and Joe Duncan.

The Fried Pie Shoppe debuted here last year, opening locations in Decatur and Glen Rose.

The Weatherford location serves fruit pies in 12 flavors plus barbecued meat pies.

It's inside Baker's, 1921 S. Main St., Weatherford, 817-599-4229; www.bakersribs.com.

(And yes, Weatherford still has 75-year-old Hutch's Pie Shop nearby for breakfast and lunch at 145 College Park Drive, 817-594-0751; www.hutchspies.com.)

Rivera's is making a comeback.

Gone 10 years, the old Rivera's on White Settlement Road will reopen March 1 near Ridgmar mall as Rivera's Mexican Grill and Market.

Rivera's will bring Tex-Mex breakfast, lunch and dinner items to the former Ridgmar Farmers Market, keeping the market's popular barbecue counter. The location will remain a farmers market; 900 Texas 183, 817-448-9100, rjriveracatering.com.
