After 20 years, Café Aspen has closed its new operators calling it quits after running the well-known, west side Fort Worth restaurant since Oct. 12.
J.D. and Suzanne Loy contacted founder David Rotman through their attorney on Monday, telling him were walking away from the restaurant and his management contract, Rotman disclosed Tuesday.
Rotman says he has a 7 1/2-year lease on the restaurant and will try to find a buyer for the business.
He declined to elaborate on the business arrangement with the Loys and what personal investment they made in the cafe, beyond saying: They were going to come and run it until they found an investor to make it theirs or until the management contract ran out and then buy it, whichever came first.
Rotman became clubhouse manager at Mira Vista Country Club after handing the Loys day-to-day running of Café Aspen, which he had opened in April 1989.
The Loys could not be immediately contacted for comment. A message left at their Azle home was not returned.
Rotman said he expected the couple to continue operating their Chaparral Catering venture.
Previously, J.D. Loy was executive sous-chef at River Crest Country Club and executive chef/food and beverage director at The Cliffs on Possum Kingdom Lake. He had taken a bronze medal as a member of a Texas Chefs Association squad competing in the 1992 Culinary Olympics in Frankfurt and taught at the Culinary School of Fort Worth.
