How can you not love a company whose website is Gobble Gobble? That's the deal at Greenberg Smoked Turkeys, my family's favorite Thanksgiving turkey source for about 25 years or more. The Tyler, Texas outfit has been smoking and shipping turkeys since the 1940s, and I haven't found bird to beat it.
Sam Greenberg runs the company his granddad started out of the family dairy barn. And ordering from Greenberg couldn't be easier: you click, pay and forget about it until the turkey arrives on your doorstep. You put it in the fridge then take it out on Thanksgiving day. If you want to heat it, Greenberg provides the simple instructions. I like to cut off some meat and dark, smoky skin from the underside and make gravy with that, some chicken stock and bacon drippings.
I just ordered my turkey, a 5-pounder for $22.85 (it came to $31.34 with shipping). It will make 10 to 15 servings, some of which will end up in green chile enchiladas next weekend. Gobble, gobble.
