Talk about boldly going where no one's gone before ... or at least in the last several movies: Star Trek continues director J.J. Abrams' hot streak reviving previously moribund franchises (his last directorial effort, Mission: Impossible III, gave the Tom Cruise trilogy a badly needed jolt). The film doesn't skimp on jaw-slackening special effects, but also manages to tell a slightly convoluted sequel/prequel tale without completely losing the thread. That everyone on screen appears to be having so much fun is merely a bonus. The three disc Blu-ray set includes an exclusive digital copy, as well as filmmaker commentary, deleted scenes, a gag reel and a slew of featurettes. (Paramount, $39.99 Blu-ray; $29.99 DVD)
ALSO OUT THIS WEEK:
-- Gone With the Wind: 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition: Warner Brothers rarely disappoints with its lavish box sets and this Blu-ray update of the 65th anniversary edition is a stunner. Housed in a lush velvet box, complete with picture book and production-related ephemera, the true gem is the epic film, lovingly restored to high-def glory.
-- Fight Club: 10th Anniversary Edition: How has a decade elapsed since director David Fincher's brutally funny, ferociously intelligent thriller? To celebrate the passage of time, Fox has spiffed up the film, and kept the previously available supplements, for Blu-ray release (which, psst, includes an extra-special gag from Fincher ... we'd say more, but y'know, the first rule about Fight Club ...).
-- The Kevin Smith Collection: A trio of Smith's films -- Clerks, Chasing Amy and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back -- make their Blu-ray debut, likely anticipating Smith's next film, A Couple of Dicks, due out in early 2010.
-- Bruno: Turns out Borat really was lightning in a bottle: Fearless comic Sacha Baron Cohen tries mightily and fails to recapture the anarchic glee that powered his 2006 masterpiece. Bruno is so painfully one-note and strained that by the time the unnerving climax arrives, you may have already shut it off. Extras include behind-the-scenes featurettes.
