Oscar’s Pub offers a quiet, cozy atmosphere

Posted 10:45am on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009

The vibe I got at Oscar’s Pub is almost like that of a ski lodge: cozy and inviting. An intimate spot to enjoy a cocktail while warming myself in front of the stone hearth fireplace.

Although small, Oscar’s has plenty of indoor seating that's perfect for conversation (think clusters of plush leather arm chairs). There's also a patio for outdoor seating with both a fire pit and propane heaters, so it's an option even during the winter months. Owner Robbie Turman, who also owns the nearby Mule Pub, set out to create a different vibe for Oscar’s. Assistant manager Peter Whipple says Robbie’s goal was to establish an “upscale” bar that caters to a professional crowd. It's only been open for about a month and a half, but Oscar's objectives are already being met; contemporary decorations, including hand-painted wall murals, provide a swanky feel and the bar already boasts a few regulars. Oscar’s, which is at 6323 Camp Bowie Blvd, in the old Eurotazza Coffeehouse spot, has happy hour specials that run seven nights a week: $2 domestics, $3 imports and wells, and $3.50 you call-its. The pub also features game-day specials, providing free hot dogs on college football Saturdays and $2 brats on pro football Sundays.

Whipple says they're not necessarily trying to attract a sports crowd, and Oscar's is definitely not a sports bar, but this time of year it is inevitable that clientele will want to watch games.

In my opinion, however, the atmosphere of Oscar’s is much more conducive to a date night where couples can pair a cocktail with selections from a small menu, including daily soup specials and the famous “Half Breed Salsa.” Whether it’s a calm place to watch the game, or a quiet place to have a date, I'd say Oscar’s Pub will hit the mark.
