Colt Ford: Country, hip-hop and golf

Posted 3:39pm on Thursday, Oct. 08, 2009

Few probably scanned past his name in the show listings -- Colt Ford? Who's that? -- and made a mental note to check out his Friday show at Billy Bob's Texas. But if you've got a flexible definition of country music, one which incorporates a goofy sense of humor and a bit of hip-hop flash, you might find yourself entertained by the Athens, Ga.-based artist. He's currently touring behind his latest album, Country Is As Country Does and later this year, will open some dates for Larry the Cable Guy.

Billy Bob's indefatigable marketing guru Pam Minick shed a little light on the entertainer: Colt Ford is actually former PGA Tour player Jason Brown, who has penned songs for such artists as Jermaine Dupri (!). At his Friday show, Minick says there will be a pitch-and-putt contest held backstage with Ford. The winner takes home four tickets to next year's Crowne Plaza Colonial tournament. And just to add an extra layer of Cowtown connection, the Colonial's tournament director Peter Ripa says he's known Brown/Ford since Brown's collegiate golfing days at the University of Georgia.
