A Fort Worth institution finds a new generation of fans

Posted 1:14pm on Wednesday, Oct. 07, 2009

The Smoke Pit is not the normal new hot spot that my buddies and I usually seek out. It is located just east of downtown Ft Worth and has been open since the 1950s. But me and my buddies Chip and Dave share a common interest: We love barbecue and beautiful women.

The Smoke Pit has both.

Looking at the place from the outside, it just has the feel of a BBQ version of Fred's. Once inside, my original feelings were confirmed. It's more like a bar than a restaurant with its walls covered in old license plates and neon beer signs. A large pair of flip-flops are stuck to the ceiling. A T-shirt reading "Fighting Solves Everthing," hangs on the wall next to one of the flat screens.

Our very attractive waitress was clad in a pink Dallas Cowboys jersey and quickly pointed that happy hour was Mon-Fri from 4-8 p.m. Drafts are $2, longnecks are $2.50. I really enjoyed the daily special, which was the chopped beef sandwich and french fries. I have heard stories about their "Bikini Tuesdays," and I have to go back for the hamburger that cost $1 on Wednesdays.

Meanwhile, Chip enjoyed the cheap cold beer and Dave developed a crush on our waitress. We will definetly be back soon....
