The Dirty Dozen: Restaurant Week begins with previews, and so much more
Restaurant Week
We’re rifling through the closet to dig out our "buffet pants," because KRLD Restaurant Week is finally here. And we aim to gorge. Restaurant Week means two things: You get to take advantage of $35 three-course prix fixe meals at some of our finest eateries, including Buttons, Del Frisco’s, Eddie V’s, Grace and The Vault. (For a complete list, visit link below.) It also means that $7 of your meal will benefit the Lena Pope Home or the North Texas Food Bank. Charity and gourmandizing — two of our favorite things. Note: This is a popular event, so reservations are a MUST. Call ahead.
When: Preview with select participating restaurants begins Friday; Restaurant Week runs Aug. 17-23.
Where: Various restaurants throughout Tarrant, Dallas, Denton and Collin counties
Cost: $35 three-course prix fixe meal (not including tax, tip and drinks)

Visa Championships
We’ve been working on our back handsprings for just this occasion. (Advil anyone?) Stars were born at this event in the past. Before they were household names, Shawn Johnson, Carly Patterson, Mary Lou Retton, Paul Hamm and the Plano-trained Nastia Liukin became all-around champions. So this is your chance to check out the country’s best gymnasts, vying for national titles and spots on the U.S. National Team. And you can say you knew them when . . .
When: Through Saturday (see Web site for times and event schedule)
Where: American Airlines Center, Dallas

'The End of America’
Forget how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop — Naomi Wolf says it takes 10 steps for a country to slide toward fascism. The documentary, based on Wolf’s bestselling book, takes a look at this lighthearted thesis and how it relates to our country today. Woot!

SceneShop: You Gotta Laugh
The setting of this comic mystery is a bait shop near the shores of Lake Texoma. Should pretty much write itself. Steven McGaw’s Baitshop Confidential, the evening’s centerpiece performance, focuses on the shop’s owner, who resents her own customers and the sheriff. Cranky and entrepreneurial. These are our people.
When: 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday
Where: Arts Fifth Avenue, 1628 Fifth Ave., Fort Worth
Cost: $12
Friend a bakery, save the dogs Hey, kids, if you’re a sucker for homeless pets, here’s a free and easy way to help. But you’ve gotta do it by Saturday. If you’re on the Facebook, do a search for "Sublime Bakery." When you find the Fort Worth bakery, click on their link and become a fan. Sublime will donate $1 to Homeward Bound Animal Rescue for every new fan through Saturday.

Where: Arlington Convention Center

Judas Priest and Whitesnake
Has it really been 30 years since Judas Priest released British Steel? No, it’s been 29. But that won’t stop Rob Halford and the other metal gods from celebrating the album’s "30th anniversary" by playing the album in its entirety for the first time ever. And for an added dose of thrashy power metal, Whitesnake’s on the bill, too.
When: 7 p.m. Thursday
Where: Nokia Theatre, Grand Prairie
Cost: $59.50
