Taking aim at the best and worst of movies and television.
Interesting news from Dallas: Texas Film Commisioner Bob Hudgins has announced that ABC will begin filming The Deep End, a new legal drama slated to be a midseason replacement in 2090-10, here in North Texas.
According to the Dallas Morning News, the network has ordered thirteen episodes of the show, which focuses on a group of new associates at a high-powered law firm. The intriguing twist: The show is actually set in Los Angeles.
Texas has been trying to remain competitive in the lucrative game of luring film and television productions, which brings dollars and jobs to the local economy. It was a bit of a blow when Prison Break, which shot two seasons here, finally decamped. The Deep End actually comes from the same producer of Prison Break, who has long-standing ties to our humble state. The show is expected to shoot primarily at the Studios at Las Colinas.
Two things that will be interesting to watch here: Will the actors -- including Billy Zane and Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz -- balk at having to be holed up in Texas and eventually demand that the production move to Los Angeles or New York. (That was the rumored reason for why Prison Break finally left; the stars were said to be tired of commuting each week to the middle of the country.)
And will yet another legal drama really last long on network television? A friend who shall remain nameless told me the rough cut of the pilot he saw wasn't worth getting excited about.
